In India around 15 – 16 lakhs of medical aspirants take admission into medical colleges and medical universities. Many of them opt for MBBS abroad and all students give entrance to get admission into their chosen institute. But it all changed in the year 2016 when NEET took place for the very first time.

NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test) is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) NEET was made mandatory in 2018 pan India for medical aspirants to appear for a common entrance exam. NEET is an exam for students who want to pursue their MD, BDS, AYUSH, BAMS, BUMS, and other medical courses in India or to study MBBS abroad. This exam is held each year pan India in 11 languages and once you qualify for the exam the score is valid for three years. So if you can take admission in your chosen college; either in India or abroad.

MBBS abroad without NEET

NEET is a mandatory exam to qualify for medical spirants in India to pursue MBBS in India or abroad. Without qualifying NEET one cannot take admission in India in any university however if you want to study abroad you can get admission there but you cannot practice your medical career in India if you have not qualified earlier.

But in 2020 due to COVID 19 pandemic, the Indian High Court allowed the MCI decision of an exception for medical students to take admission abroad without NEET. But this is only a one-time chance and students who have taken admission in MBBS have to appear for NEET 2024; which is in May. Students who will not appear for the NEET 2024 will pursue MBBS at their own risk, as they will not be eligible to appear for National Exit Test a screening test conducted by MCI (Medical Council of India).

What if a student fails NEET

NEET is a mandatory exam to qualify to pursue MBBS in India or abroad for Indian students. But in case they fail the exam no worries they can appear next year. You can attend coaching and prepare for the year and then give it a try again.

The students can take admission in Medical Colleges and Universities without NEET but it is only for those students who want to study MBBS abroad and also practice their Medical career in any other country. But if students want to pursue MBBS and practice both in India then by all means NEET is Mandatory.

As stated above already. The only one-time exception was made by MCI for medical aspirants to take admission abroad without NEET due to the COVID19 pandemic. But students enrolled now have to give NEET 2024 or else they will not be eligible to appear for MCI screening after their studies. If they don't qualify for NEET 2024 their MBBS is at their own risk.

Eligibility Criteria to get MBBS Admission
  • 1. The student must have 50% in Physics, Biology, and Chemistry in the 10th and 12th
  • 2. The Student must qualify NEET exam
  • 3. The student must have studied English as a compulsory subject
Percentile for qualifying NEET
  • 1. For General Category students 50th percentile
  • 2. For General Category students PH 45th percentile
  • 3. For OBC, SC, ST category students 40th
  • 4. For OBC, SC, ST category students PH 40th percentile
