The college is known with many names. The campus provides excellent education to the students. The college has graduate, postgraduate and research programs in management and engineering. With four campuses spread across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, BIHER is authorized by the AICTE and accredited by the NAAC with an "A" rating.

Dr. S. Jagathrakshakan founded Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust in 1984, which went on to become the first self-financing Engineering College in TamilNadu, and later became Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). In 1989, Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital was founded by the trust. Under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital was initially acknowledged by MHRD as a Deemed to be University in July 2002. It was then placed under the new trust of Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER). Afterwards, the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) took over the responsibilities of the Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the other institutes listed below.
As a result, the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) offers around 10,000 international students a multistream, multicultural, and excellent education. It occupies a vast 603 acres of land and has 1.3 crore square feet of buildings spread across 6 campuses in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, along with cutting-edge infrastructure. There are highly trained members of the teaching faculty available to oversee and instruct a range of UG and PG courses.
At the UG level, BIHER Chennai provides B.Tech, B.Arch, BBA, BCA, B.Sc., and BA in a variety of subjects. It provides M.Tech, M.Arch, MBA, MCA, M.Sc., M.Com, and MA courses in a variety of specializations at the postgraduate level. The Department of Management Studies was established in 1992 and provides both full-time and part-time MBA and Ph.D. programs. Nine specialties are available in the MBA program.
