Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College was founded in 1985 by the Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust, which sought to advance education and effect change. In 1988, the Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was established within three years of its founding, and in 1991, the Thai Moogambigai Dental College was launched. In 2003, both colleges were granted Deemed University status as Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute in accordance with directives from the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi, and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.

A number of centrally financed scholarships under the Ministry of Health & Resources Development were awarded to students.
In order to give students a comfortable learning environment, the Institute has equipped itself with a library, cafeteria, sports courts, gyms, hostel facilities, hospital and medical facilities, wifi-enabled campus, auditorium, community center, labs, conference halls, banking facility with ATM, seminar halls, and a plethora of other resources.
Library : The library has resources such as an E-Library with over 2,08,987 books, thousands of national and international periodicals, Ebooks, weekly and monthly magazines, and daily newspapers in Tamil, Hindi, and English. Software for digital libraries and library automation are also offered.There are air-conditioned seats available for both teachers and pupils. The most recent "3M" security systems are installed at the library. The e-library is open seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.
