About Indian Maritime University, Chennai

The beginning of nautical training on board H.M. Training Ship "Dufferin" in 1927 marked the beginning of maritime training in India. In addition to Naval Training, Marine Engineering Training was initiated on T.S. Dufferin in 1935. The Indian government realized early on, following the nation's independence on August 15, 1947, that a sizable merchant fleet was essential. The college was opened with the consideration of the Indian Government. The primary goal of the college was to turn students into cadets by providing them with practical training and hands-on learning experience so that they can make them paramilitary candidates.

The college changed its name to Marine Engineering and Research Institute in 1995. It is also the first maritime college in India and Southeast Asia. In addition to having an ISO 9001:2008 accreditation, MERIMumbai has an ICRA grade of Grade-I. At MERI, Mumbai, the training program is entirely residential and places a strong emphasis on discipline as well as practical training in marine workshops. In addition to academics, the extracurricular activities offered by regimental residential training include games both indoors and outdoors, swimming, and cultural pursuits. Over the past 60 years, the M.E.R.I.'s legacy and the confidence of the shipping industry have allowed numerous cadets to advance to different levels of competency both ashore and on board ships. This passion and commitment has not changed. Among the numerous tasks completed by former cadets of M.E.R.I. are well-deserved postings at the World Maritime University, the IMF, and the United Nations, to mention a few.
