SRM University was originally known as SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), a private deemed university situated in Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu (near Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India. Originally established at Kattankulathur in 1985 as SRM Engineering College, it was granted deemed status in 2002. Six campuses make up the SRM Institute of Science and Technology: one each in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, and Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, and NCR Delhi.
SRM (Sri Ramaswamy Memorial) Engineering institution was the first institution to be formed as what is now SRMIST. The other SRM colleges followed in 1992 and 1997.As SRM Institute of Science and Technology, the institute was granted deemed status in 2002. In 2006, it changed its name to SRM University. In response to UGC's recommendation to remove the word "university" from the name, SRM Institute of Science and Technology was the new name in 2017.
